The umbrella skirt was first made fashionable in 1947 by fashion designer Christian Dior. He launched his first collection at the age of 42 after the war. Dior's designing were shocking and exciting, introducing a new era for humanity and fashion. The umbrella skirt silhouette became Dior's signature, known as “The New Look”.
Now umbrella skirts have returned to the runways in a modern version. I remember in 2001 when Blumarine showed its' umbrella skirts revival collection - it was awesome. However not all people were completely ready for the high fashion trend. Woman were still commonly wearing pencil skirts or mini-skirts.
At this time, there were still few channels that allowed people to interoperate clothing as we do currently. Today we adapt much faster to emerging trends in fashion. Now in 2014 we have access to emerging trends through many channels such as; emerging fashion brands, blogs/social networks, low price point “fast-fashion” and international e-commerce retailing.
I see more and more umbrella skirts today than in 2001. They are worn by common people, bloggers, not only just by celebs. I find great inspirations in WendyLookBook outfits and also in vintage Brigitte Bardot pictures. I love to browse ASOS to browse new fashion trends.
Today umbrella skirts are a lovely way to be feminine and elegant. Wear one with worn shirts, sporty sweatshirts, crop top and t-shirts.
Here my selections Enjoy !
